Program Calendar 2018/19

APRIL 5, 6, 12, 13, 14
O’Dell Johnson Performing Arts Center, Laney College
900 Fallon St, Oakland, CA 94607

Under the artistic direction of Sarah Crowell and Rashidi Omari, JEWELS will take thousands of audience members on a journey through four levels of the underground, where young people from a not-too-distant future have been sent to find the mythical Book of Secrets that just may contain the answers to save a world in danger.  At each level of the underground the youth are faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges that, when overcome, reveal the jewels that lie within each of them – jewels of the presence, power and creativity that are required for the world to survive.  Will they return to the surface and participate in the shaping of a new world or will they perish in the deep recesses of the earth?

JEWELS features the teenage members of the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company, their 9-12 year old counterparts in the Destiny Junior Company
directed by Mika Lemoine, and a group of 14 fierce grandmothers from Destiny’s Elders Project who play the role of the Mothers of the Earth.

The performance features work from an array of guest artists, including: Suzanne Gallo and Rose Huey of the internationally-acclaimed vertical dance company, BANDALOOP, Antwan Davis from Molodi, a body percussion troupe from Las Vegas, Risa Jaroslow, artistic director of Risa Jaroslow & Dancers, Princeton Maharam (AKA Princetonation), Destiny alum and local recording artist, and celebrated Bay Area performer/choreographers Paula Dewart, Mika Lemoine, and Jessica Wolf.
