We hope you will join us.

O’Dell Johnson Performing Arts Center, Laney College

The Black (W)hole is a healing and celebratory experience which mourns and honors the lives of young people killed in Oakland (and other parts of the Bay Area) before the age of 35. In partnership with spoken word artist and playwright Marc Bamuthi Joseph, Oakland visual artist and muralist Brett Cook, Yoram Savion of Yak Films, The Elders Project, and Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company Artistic Directors Sarah Crowell and Rashidi Omari, and Destiny Elders Project Director, Risa Jaroslow, the teen company and elders will spend the next several months creating dance and spoken word poetry, while working with the Oakland families of young people lost.

Created with funding from a Hewlett Foundation 50 Arts Commission, this process culminates with performances in April and May of 2020. Additional major support also comes from the Phyllis C. Wattis Foundation and The MAP Fund which is primarily supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional funds from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
