TEEN COMPANY

The Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company (DAYPC) is a diverse group of teens that collaborates with professional artists to create dynamic, original productions.

WHO WE ARE

Combining hip hop, modern and aerial dance, theater, song, and rap, company members take the stage to tell stories that stem from their lived experiences and express their visions for a world transformed. Since 1993, DAYPC has performed original work for up to 25,000 audience members annually, garnering critical acclaim and widespread community support for both their technical prowess and their commitment to advancing inclusivity, equity, and justice. In 2017, DAYPC received the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award, the nation’s top honor for creative youth development programs.

OUR EFFICACY

DAYPC members cultivate the confidence, purpose, and dedication they need to succeed in their academic careers. Over the past five years, 98% of DAYPC seniors have graduated high school and approximately 95% have pursued higher education, including careers in the arts. By comparison, Oakland’s high school graduation rate is 65%, and around half of Oakland youth who graduate high school attend college.

OUR PROCESS

Every fall, Co-Artistic Directors Sarah Crowell and Rashidi Omari hold auditions where they select 25 young artists to join them in a 9-month process of rehearsals, workshops, and scriptwriting sessions. In the spring, DAYPC premieres their new, full-length dance/theater production to packed houses of audience members of diverse ages and socio-economic backgrounds.

Company members rehearse twice per week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-7:30pm. As the spring production approaches, rehearsal time increases. DAYPC performs up to 30 times during the season, mostly on weekends.

One of the nights of the big show I remember waiting in the wings to go onstage and feeling like I was in heaven. I thought to myself, “I could do this forever.” The performance experience was incredible with the company every single time, but especially throughout the run of our big show.”
